Geophylla #158

Geophylla is a code-based artwork series by Canadian visual artist and label owner, Emily Nicoll. Metallic flower-like structures are built from stacked petal layers, each with randomized geometry and colour drawn from mineral-inspired palettes. Each of the 256 outputs is a unique infinite animation. Geophylla is Nicoll's second long-form generative project on Art Blocks, following her collaboration with musician 747 on Pacific Spirit (2025). -- I've been experimenting with spinning metallic floral forms in 3D since 2021. While flowers are perceived as loose organic shapes, they are radially symmetric and mathematically precise, strictly following the rules of nature and Fibonacci sequences. This juxtaposition between softness and rigidity is a recurring theme in my work. This particular project brings together floral forms, metallic geometry and mineral-inspired palettes to create hypnotic looping animations using randomness derived from Ethereum blockchain hashes. Over time, my process for creating these forms has developed into a sequence of decisions I follow and a repeatable methodology. Sometimes while I'm working, I find myself feeling like a computer, on autopilot, following this set of mental instructions. This thought is what spurred the creation of Geophylla; I wanted to see if my creative process could be externalized and translated into a system. More information: enicoll.com/geophylla
